Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin mailing new Medicare cards on April 1, 2018. The new cards will have the members' new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) which is effective immediately unless the patient is new to Medicare, in which case refer to the "coverage starts" date on the card. Start using the MBI as soon as your patients get their new cards. People new to Medicare will only have a Medicare card with an MBI.
How to obtain a patent's new MBI:
- Directly from your patient's new card: Medicare will be mailing out new cards between April 2018 and December 2019. For CMS mailing schedule by state, click here (PDF)
- From the Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) portal for your area: Starting in June 2018 a look-up tool will be available on your MACs portal.
- From the Medicare Remittance Advice (RA): Starting October 2018 the RA will include both the MBI and HICN. This will continue through December 2019.
