As CMS prepares for the issuance of new Medicare numbers and cards, they have made reference materials available to help providers and their patients prepare for the rapidly approaching change. The new cards are being mailed between April 2018 and April 2019.
By using these resources and taking these simple steps to prepare, you and your patients can be ready to make this transition as smooth as possible.
- Medicare Contractor Portal
Providers can sign up for their Medicare Contractor’s portal now. The portal will allow providers to look up members' new MBI numbers. By signing up now, you can become familiar with the portal making it an easier transition to the new MBI numbers. Click Here to find and sign up for your Medicare Contractor portal now.
- Posters and Tear Sheets
Medicare has provided posters to hang in your office or facility. You can order copies or print your own here. Medicare has also provided tear off sheets. These can be mailed or given to patients when they visit your provider office.
- Provider Ombudsman
Should you need any assistance or encounter any issues, CMS has announced the appointment of a Provider Ombudsman dedicated to answering questions related to the new Medicare number system. The Ombudsman will ensure that CMS hears and understands any implementation problems experienced by clinicians, hospitals, suppliers, and other providers. Dr. Eugene Freund will be serving in this position and may be contacted at NMCProviderQuestions@cms.hhs.gov.
